I was driving home when i saw a school bus ahead but not too far away.As i got closer the driver put on the yellow flashing lights but he kept on coming closer.I started to slow down but i couldn't stop in time before i got to about 15-20 feet from the bus so i didn't want to stop right next to the bus which i knew was illegal so i sped up a tiny bit to pass the bus before he came to a full stop and the sign came out. I'm pretty sure that he didn't turn on his red lights before I got next to him but as i was passing, the driver blew his horn at me for a whole second and now Im afraid that he is going to report my plate and I'll get a fine or worse, points on my liscense and insurance rate increases.I know for a fact the bus wasn't completely stopped and the stop sign wasn't out but im not sure whether the lights turned red or not cus i was kinda panicking that I was getting too close to the bus. Are bus drivers in New York allowed to report my plate?How long before i recieve a ticket? there were no kids crossing because the bus wasn't even stopped yet and the bus was goin pretty fast for having his yellow lights on oh ya and im 17 and i regret doing what i did and ill never do it again but its done so right now i just really wanna know how long before i can rest assured that nobody is comin to my door or that nothin is comin in the mail THX ALOT FOR ANSWERS

It is illegal when the lights are flashing, and you are liable to a hefty fine if you do.

I know you stop when the reds are flashing and the stop sign is out. don't be fooled by the wholesome bus driver image- i see plenty of school bus drivers driving carelessly everyday- its a shame-

Hi There , I don't know about new york , BUT in Canada , they will fine you big time if you do not stop and wait all day for a school bus.

i doubt he even saw your plate....but next time don't speed up. at least make an effort to stop/slow down...when you speed up and blow past the bus is what pisses the drivers off and could cause a kid to get hit. if you had stopped and been too close to the bus, the driver would have likely waved you to go before he let the kids out.

Once the yellow lights came on, you had no right to pass the bus.

I hope so! You could have stopped but didn't...do you realize the danger you put yourself and other people in when you made the decision to pass that bus?

Yes the bus driver can report the plate. And you cant pass a bus when its lights are on becuase that means that they are giving you a sign to slow down because he is picking up a kid,, he was prob blowing the horn becuase you passed him and maybe a kid was crossing the road.. But i wouldnt worry about it i think the cops would be looking for you already.

What you should have done is completed your stop as soon as you could. It is not illegal to ''stop right next to the bus''. Chances are the bus driver won't report you and merely intended for you to rethink your actions, as you have done. You are conscientious and that will make you an ''above average'' driver someday. Relax and file this one under ''lesson learned''.
